Lecture 4

I just got out the 4th lecture and it was really quite interesting, the lecture topic was: From the big screen to the small screen and we ran through a brief timeline of the history of the cinema, we kind of ran out of time to go through the timeline in more detail but there should be a proper one at learning @griffith byt his afternoon so I will make sure I check it out!

We also watched a great short film by BMW starring Clive Owen and Madonna here is the link

Tute 4 tasks continued again..

I have to keep starting a new post as Blogspot is playing up & its easier than potentially deleting everything I have!!

Question 7. Why do phone numbers in Hollywood films start w
ith '555'?

because no matter what area code you use, any phone number starting with 555 will take you to the phone company information line. That way, they don't run into problems by accidently picking someone's real phone number and having millions of people call them because they saw it in a movie or tv show.

It started in 1973, the same year the 555 directory assistance system began.

Also worth a mention

I also thought it was worth a mention as this is New Com Tech and as it was pointed out in the Tute, so exciting the griffith website will have one log in for portal, learning and email YAHOO!! it was super super annoying having to log into all three!

Lecture week 3

I have just been to the week 3 lecture and I found it very interesting! we were learning about Cine-Speak - the language of the cinema.

We also found out in the next few tutorials we will be shooting some kind of movie and putting it together and posting it on our blog which sounds fun.

In order to do that we needed to discuss further the 8 different types of shots and what they are used for, and also the fact that film is always about a question and and answer the 5 important things are Who, What, Where, When, Why and How, here is a brief discription of what wrote down in class.

Who : who is the movie about - Type of shot used Close Up

What: what is our character doing? - Mid Shot

Where: where is our story taking place, understanding location - Long Shot (also known as an establishing shot at the beginning of each scene.

When: time can be difficult to capture so you can use both a - Wideshot and a Close up for example a close up of a clock may help

Why : we have to try keep the why hidden for a while otherwise people would stop watching the film - a Big Shot could help with the why as it can reveal more about the character.

How: A single medium close up or a series of close ups can help expain an event.

Also most importantly we learned that every shot needs to serve a purpost and have a narrative form.

Stay tuned for my video in coming weeks.....!

Example 4 laptop PC

My final example is the Laptop, this is probably the biggest example of convergence technology I could think of as you can do practically ANYTHING on a laptop and best of all its portable! you can email, send sms, talk to people across the other side of the world in real time and all for free - gotta LOVE Skype, you can play games watch movies, listen to music, create music CDs, take photos with the buit in webcam & videos, connect to the internet from almost anywhere! the possibilities are endless!

Example 3. Ipod

My example 3 is the humble Ipod, hasnt it come a long way?! I was just excited to be able to exercise out doors and not have to worry about the CD skipping!! those days are long gone now not only can you use you Ipod to listen to music (you can store up to 40,000 songs) you can watch videos and movies, browse through photos you can download from your PC. If you have an iPod and you're in the market for a new car or a new head unit receiver, you can get one that fully integrates your player into the sound system. There are manufacturer-built car stereos that support iPod integration to the level that you can control the device through the head-unit or steering-wheel controls. Pretty cool stuff!

Example 2. Blackberry

My example 2 is the Blackberry Storm - now I actually have this phone so I can happily tell you about its features first hand. well first of all you can make and recieve phone calls.. I know too cool hey!! seriously now.. it can connect to the internet and has pre loaded shortcuts to your favourites such as facebook and MSN also Flickr, you can play games, music and videos and you can also send and recieve emails in the exact same way as you would an SMS, the blackberry also takes pictures and videos they can be emailed or uploaded with the press of a button!

example 1. Xbox

My first example is the XBox video game console, its primary purpose is the playing of console games, but it is also able to play back video and music and to connect to the internet.

Tute 2 Convergence Technology

What is Convergence Technology??

To put it simply and how I understand it to be convergence technology allows you to access different types of media on/or with the same device.

In the past for example each entertainment media had to be played on a specific device. Video was played on a television by using a video player of some sort, music was played in a tape or CD player, radio was played on an AM/FM tuner, and video games were played through a console of some sort.

Technological convergence in the last few years has resulted in devices that not only interact with the media they are primarily designed to handle, but also with a number of other formats.

I will now do 4 posts with examples of convergence technology with a brief explanation!

Still getting the hang of blogging

Ok so I am trying to remember what I learned in the first tute and figured out I can easily add a picture to my post now I will try a hyperlink! I literally looked through WAY to many blogs and wanted to hyperlink to one I thought was cool.. but after heaps of searching.. I realised there is alot of people out there with WAY to much time on there hands and so I thought this website might be appropriate for them :P

First Tute, First Blog entry

So this is my first EVER blog so here goes.... I was pleasantly surprised on how easy it was to set up a blog, I was a little nervous coming to the tute thinking it was all going to go straight over my head but so far so good! I had heard of a blog before but to be honest never really knew exactly what one was, and after doing a little sifting through can not believe the varitey of stuff out there!

ok now as I am still kind of new to this I shall try and add a picture to this post so here goes... something symbolic to all this newly learned technology:
